Born in 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut, Annie Leibovitz enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute intent on studying painting. It was not until she traveled to Japan with her mother the summer after her sophomore year that she discovered her interest in taking photographs. When she returned to San Francisco that fall, she began taking night classes in photography. Time spent on a kibbutz in Israel allowed her to hone her skills further.

In 1970 Leibovitz approached Jann Wenner, founding editor of Rolling Stone, which he’d recently launched and was operating out of San Francisco. Impressed with her portfolio, Wenner gave Leibovitz her first assignment: shoot John Lennon. Leibovitz’s black-and-white portrait of the shaggy-looking Beatle graced the cover of the January 21, 1971 issue. Two years later she was named Rolling Stone chief photographer.

When the magazine began printing in color in 1974, Leibovitz followed suit. “In school, I wasn’t taught anything about lighting, and I was only taught black-and-white,” she told ARTnews in 1992. “So I had to learn color myself.” Among her subjects from that period are Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and Patti Smith. Leibovitz also served as the official photographer for the Rolling Stones’ 1975 world tour. While on the road with the band she produced her iconic black-and-white portraits of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, shirtless and gritty.

In 1980 Rolling Stone sent Leibovitz to photograph John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who had recently released their album “Double Fantasy.” For the portrait Leibovitz imagined that the two would pose together nude. Lennon disrobed, but Ono refused to take off her pants. Leibovitz “was kinda disappointed,” according toRolling Stone, and so she told Ono to leave her clothes on. “We took one Polaroid,” said Leibovitz, “and the three of us knew it was profound right away.” The resulting portrait shows Lennon nude and curled around a fully clothed Ono. Several hours later, Lennon was shot dead in front of his apartment. The photograph ran on the cover of the Rolling Stone Lennon commemorative issue. In 2005 the American Society of Magazine Editors named it the best magazine cover from the past 40 years.

Annie Leibovitz: Photographs, the photographer’s first book, was published in 1983. The same year Leibovitz joined Vanity Fair and was made the magazine’s first contributing photographer. At Vanity Fair she became known for her wildly lit, staged, and provocative portraits of celebrities. Most famous among them are Whoopi Goldberg submerged in a bath of milk and Demi Moore naked and holding her pregnant belly. (The cover showing Moore — which then-editor Tina Brown initially balked at running — was named second best cover from the past 40 years.) Since then Leibovitz has photographed celebrities ranging from Brad Pitt to Mikhail Baryshnikov. She’s shot Ellen DeGeneres, the George W. Bush cabinet, Michael Moore, Madeleine Albright, and Bill Clinton. She’s shot Scarlett Johannson and Keira Knightley nude, with Tom Ford in a suit; Nicole Kidman in ball gown and spotlights; and, recently, the world’s long-awaited first glimpse of Suri Cruise, along with parents Tom and Katie. Her portraits have appeared in Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker, and in ad campaigns for American Express, the Gap, and the Milk Board.

Among other honors, Leibovitz has been made a Commandeur des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government and has been designated a living legend by the Library of Congress. Her first museum show, Photographs: Annie Leibovitz 1970-1990, took place in 1991 at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and toured internationally for six years. At the time she was only the second living portraitist — and the only woman — to be featured in an exhibition by the institution.

Leibovitz met Susan Sontag in 1989 while photographing the writer for her book AIDS and its Metaphors. “I remember going out to dinner with her and just sweating through my clothes because I thought I couldn’t talk to her,” Leibovitz said in an interview with The New York Times late last year. Sontag told her, “You’re good, but you could be better.” Though the two kept separate apartments, their relationship lasted until Sontag’s death in late 2004.

Sontag’s influence on Leibovitz was profound. In 1993 Leibovitz traveled to Sarajevo during the war in the Balkans, a trip that she admits she would not have taken without Sontag’s input. Among her work from that trip is Sarajevo, Fallen Bicycle of Teenage Boy Just Killed by a Sniper, a black-and-white photo of a bicycle collapsed on blood-smeared pavement. Sontag, who wrote the accompanying essay, also first conceived of Leibovitz’s book Women (1999). The book includes images of famous people along with those not well known. Celebrities like Susan Sarandon and Diane Sawyer share space with miners, soldiers in basic training, and Las Vegas showgirls in and out of costume.

Annie Leibovitz Quotes:

  • A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people.
  • A very subtle difference can make the picture or not.
  • Coming tight was boring to me, just the face… it didn’t have enough information.
  • I am impressed with what happens when someone stays in the same place and you took the same picture over and over and it would be different, every single frame.
  • I still need the camera because it is the only reason anyone is talking to me.
  • I was scared to do anything in the studio because it felt so claustrophobic. I wanted to be somewhere where things could happen and the subject wasn’t just looking back at you.

  •  I was scared to do anything in the studio because it felt so claustrophobic. I wanted to be somewhere where things could happen and the subject wasn’t just looking back at you.
  • If I didn’t have my camera to remind me constantly, I am here to do this, I would eventually have slipped away, I think. I would have forgotten my reason to exist.
  • Lennon was very helpful. What he taught me seems completely obvious: he expected people to treat each other well.
  • Nature is so powerful, so strong. Capturing its essence is not easy – your work becomes a dance with light and the weather. It takes you to a place within yourself.
  • There are still so many places on our planet that remain unexplored. I’d love to one day peel back the mystery and understand them.
  • When you are younger, the camera is like a friend and you can go places and feel like you’re with someone, like you have a companion.

Leibovitz’s most recent book, A Photographer’s Life: 1990-2005, includes her trademark celebrity portraits. But it also features personal photographs from Leibovitz’s life: her parents, siblings, children, nieces and nephews, and Sontag.

Leibovitz, who has called the collection “a memoir in photographs,” was spurred to assemble it by the deaths of Sontag and her father, only weeks apart.

The book even includes photos of Leibovitz herself, like the one that shows her nude and eight months pregnant, à la Demi Moore.

That picture was taken in 2001, shortly before Leibovitz gave birth to daughter Sarah.

Daughters Susan and Samuelle, named in honor of Susan and Leibovitz’s father, were born to a surrogate in 2005.

Leibovitz composed these personal photographs with materials that she used when she was first starting out in the ’70s: a 35-millimeter camera, black-and-white Tri X film.

“I don’t have two lives,” she writes in the book’s introduction. “This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.”

Still, she told the Times, this book is the “most intimate, it tells the best story, and I care about it.”

According to urban legend, lying just beyond the city of Tokyo is one of the most haunted locations in all of Japan. The exact location of the Himuro Mansion (or Himikyru Mansion as it is sometimes known) is widely unknown but the legend puts the mansion in a rocky region just beyond the city limits of Tokyo.

A Purported Image of the Himuro Mansion

The mansion is said to have been home to one of the most gruesome murders in modern Japanese history. Local lore has it that for generations, the Himuro family had participated in a strange, twisted Shinto ritual known as “The Strangling Ritual” in order to seal off bad karma from within the Earth, every half century or so.

The most popular version of the tale states that bad karma would emerge each December (other versions simply say “toward the end of the year”) from a portal on the Mansions grounds. In order to prevent this, a maiden was chosen at birth by the master of the household and isolated from the outside world in order to prevent her from developing any ties to the outside world, which would in turn, jeopardize the effect of the ritual.

On the day of the Strangling Ritual, the maiden was bound by ropes on her ankles, wrists, and neck. The ropes were attached to teams of oxen or horses to rip her limbs from her body, quartering her. The ropes used to bind her appendages would then be soaked in her blood and laid over the gateway of the portal. They believed that this would seal off the portal for another half century until the ritual had to be repeated.

During the last recorded Strangling Ritual it is said that the maiden had fallen in love with a man who tried to save her from the ritual. This “tie” to Earth tainted her blood and spirit and ruined the ritual altogether. Upon learning of the maidens love, the master took up his sword and brutally murdered all of his family members, before finally, in fear of what would soon happen, fell upon his own blade.

This is the basis of the “haunting” of the Himuro Mansion. Local legend has it that these souls of the murdered family wander the mansion attempting to repeat the failed ritual using whomever enters the abandoned building. Blood splashes on the walls are reportedly seen, as if they were flicked from the blade of a sword that had recently sliced through flesh. Many have reported seeing spirits and apparitions dressed completely in white, rinsing cloths and preparing the grounds for the ritual.

A Purported Image of the Himuro Mansion Hallway

Interest in the Himuro Mansion has peaked due to it’s inclusion into the back story of the popular game, Fatal Frame. Here is a quote from Makoto Shibata, Chief Producer of Fatal Frame, regarding the legend:

“In an area outside Tokyo, there lies a mansion in which it’s said seven people were murdered in a grisly manner. On the same property, there lie three detached residences that surround the mansion, all of which are rumored to have ties to the mansion’s troubled past. It’s said there is an underground network of tunnels that lay beneath the premises, but nobody knows who made these tunnels or what purpose they served. Many inexplicable phenomenons have been reported occurring on the property. Bloody handprints have been found splattered all over the walls. Spirits have been spotted on the premises… even in broad daylight. A narrow stairway leads to an attic where a spirit-sealed talisman is rumored to be locked away. Men have sought this talisman, only to be found later with their bodies broken and rope marks around their wrists. There’s a crumbling old statue of a woman in a kimono, but its head is missing. If you take a photo of a certain window, a young girl can be seen in the developed picture. These incidents have provoked fear in the people of Tokyo, and many believe that those who live near this area will become cursed. The deaths of those seven people are unexplained to this day.”

Now, the question is, did any of this really happen? Probably not. The core allure of this legend is also it’s silver bullet. If such a grisly murder did occur (sources put this between 30 and 80 years ago) in such recent times, where is the record?

It is highly unlikely that no police station or newspaper have records of this mass murder taking place just outside of Tokyo.

Regarding the mystery of the location, some believers have offered the notion that the Himuro family has once again taken ownership of the mansion and is currently living there.. but that conflicts with the legend in that all family members were supposedly murdered AND the “firsthand accounts” of events witnessed on the property by locals and researchers.

Another peculiarity of note is that Tecmo advertised the game in North America with the tagline: “Based on a true story,” but without on the original Japanese release. Because of this, some have theorized that the entire legend was fabricated by the game developers.

"I wish I never met you," Roselle said in a voice filled with hatred as she stared darts at Ashgary. They were both inside a small cottage, winter has fallen and it was white all over.

Ashgary looked at Roselle and smiled wryly.

"C'mon hon, you don't really mean that. Don't tell me you didn't enjoy it."

"You pig!" Roselle screamed. "I trusted you! I thought you loved me. Now what am I going to do with this baby? I left my boyfriend for you, I can't raise this baby alone!"

"Get rid of it then. We both don't want it," Ashgary said nonchalantly. "You knew I was already married. So don't say I gave you any false hopes."

"I hate you! You're not getting away with this!"

Roselle started to hit Ashgary on the face in a fit of rage. The man attempted to defend himself and in doing so, accidentally pushed Roselle aside. The woman hit the side of the bed with a loud clunk, her whole body screaming with pain. They were both shocked when they saw blood gushing down from Roselle's legs.

"I- I'm sorry. This is not my fault," Ashgary stammered, panic written all over his face.

"Help me, Ash. Oh please, don't let our baby die!"

Ashgary started to pick up Roselle from the floor. He wasn't prepared for the knife she had hidden in her dress. Quick as a snake, she started stabbing Ashgary on the neck, soon red was mixed with the whiteness of snow. Ashgary made a gurgling sound and slumped dead on the floor.

"You'll never leave me, Ashgary. I love you too much..." Roselle whispered as life slowly drained from her own body.

Soon both their blood turned the snow scarlet. Crows circled the cottage, signalling death...

(Well, a dark twist to another innocent looking picture. :-) I need to put on more emotion, I think. My kind of writing is way too stilted. Please click this link to visit Magpie Tales)

I was surfing the net and I came across this painting which particularly captivated me. It was both bizarre and beautiful, which was just my kind of thing. It turns out that the painting was made by an artist named Leslie Ditto who hails from Memphis, Tennessee. You can visit her website by clicking here. Meanwhile here are some samples of her work.

Who hasn’t heard of an urban legend or two? Every legend can have a bit of truth it. Even if you don’t completely believe in the legend, try it out and see if you don’t get to the point where the hair on the back of your neck or arms stands up. Some of the creepiest urban legends are done behind the closed doors of the small confines of your bathroom in front of the mirror and in complete darkness.

The Blue Baby Urban Legend

To execute this legend, you need to go into the bathroom, close the door and shut off the lights. This could possibly be enough to start the creepy factor, depending on how small your bathroom is and whether you are claustrophobic or not. The next step is to pretend that you are rocking a baby, while you chant the phrase “Blue Baby” thirteen times. They say a baby will appear and scratch you. When this happens you must drop it and run, because if you don’t a women will appear and scream loud enough to break the glass, “Give me back my baby!” If you are still found to be holding the baby, she will kill you. Are you brave enough to rock the baby?

The Bloody Mary Urban Legend

There are said to be two different versions of this urban legend. I am sure that either one will be enough to give you a good scare, if you should be so daring enough to give them a try when you are home alone and in the darkness of night.

The back story to this legend is pretty much the same. It tells the story of a girl who was thought to be dead, but she was buried alive. When she made the effort to escape the confines of her coffin, she couldn’t get out. When the parents realized that the girl might have indeed been buried alive, they dug up her grave to see that she had tried to claw her way out of her coffin.

The first way you can have Mary come and pay a visit to you is:

On a Friday the 13th turn off all the lights in your house. Make your way to the bathroom and turn on the water in the sink, as well as, the bathtub and flush the toilet. Then, look into your mirror and “Blood Mary” five times. She may just appear in the mirror and if she does you better turn on those lights real quick or she will stab you in your back.

The second way to conjure up a visit from Mary is:

You must be alone in the dark and in front of a mirror. While you say “Bloody Mary” three times, you must turn around in place. After the third time, she will appear behind you in the mirror and scare you half to death.

I guess there is more than one way to stir up a Bloody Mary.

The Candy Man

Be careful when asking the Candy Man to come for a visit, because if anybody can do it, the Candy Man can.

When you are in the bathroom, make sure to turn off all you lights. Look into the mirror and say the “Candy Man’s” name five times. Then you will see a pair of red glowing eyes appear staring back at you. As soon as you see those creepy eyes, you must turn on the light and run to the brightest spot in your house, because if you don’t do it, he will come through the mirror and kill you.

The Lady in White

Are you missing a loved one? Well The Lady in White urban legend gives you a way of seeing them again.

Enter your bathroom alone and turn off the light. Turn around five times and utter the phrase “Lady in White.” Turn the opposite way and say the name of your deceased loved one. They will appear in the mirror after you say their name.

Not a bad way to catch up on old times, huh?

Now, that you know the proper ways of executing these urban legends, try them out and see if you can scare yourself enough to believe in them.

This is a story told to me by my sister. I let her type the story herself. This happened back when she was still in high school:

Joycie is a girl who has her 3rd eye open… Plus she is an arrogant and naive girl.. She keeps harassing this person John (not his real name) and John hates her totally… I mean not only John hates her, the whole school hates her! But she had a boyfriend named Steven. She went around boasting how nice her boyfriend was and  gave her red roses everyday after school…

I mean , the way to describe her , only 3 words :
(1) Sick
(2) Disgusting
(3) Crazy

She’s a total weirdo! I’ve been called a stupid ugly girl by her and now I really hated her to the max! Fine if you say maybe she's not that bad… well just read on…

On a Wednesday morning, Joycie kept saying to everyone that she saw a ghost in the toilet.. We thought she was crazy, no one believed her at that time coz everyone hated her! After school that day, Steven came to pick her up in a Harley Davidson Motorbike, Joycie kept telling Steven to speed up! Faster and Faster! Joycie accidentally pushed her boyfriend forward so Steven lost control of his bike and an accident occurred.

It was terrible, Joycie only suffered some minor injuries and scratches but Steven, DEAD… She kept on crying and she kept saying she can see her dead boyfriend’s spirit, loitering around the accident scene… She called John at night, to tell him about what had happened. John was shocked… to think this would happened.. But the person who really cause the death of Steven was Joycie… We went to her house the next day, and saw her using black magic on Steven’s picture which was hanged on the wall, full of needles and blood….this is a real story although it’s like not real… I didn’t believed that Joycie would do such thing at first…

Blessed be!

During one of our idle times at work, my colleagues and I started to chat to pass away the time. One of them, Jesa, started to tell us about her high school friend's scary experience. Please tell me what you think of this.

Jesa told us that she had this friend, let's just call her Irma, who lived in an old house that they bought really cheap. Irma and her mother were the only occupants of the house. The house was perfect for them since it was near Irma's house and the place where her mother works. Life was pretty normal for a few weeks after they moved in.

Then one night, while Irma was lying in bed alone in her room, she decided to record her voice using her mobile phone. That time the song "How Did You Know" was very popular (I posted a video of the song just in case you aren't familiar with it below) so Irma started singing it with feelings. When she finished, Irma realized that instead of pressing the voice record function of her phone, she chose video instead. Since video also records sound, she saved it anyway and then started to watch the clip.

The lights were out when she took the video clip so she wasn't expecting to see anything on the screen. When  her song was about to end (she became aware of the fact that she couldn't make a living out of her singing, her voice was horrible), a woman's face suddenly zoomed into focus on the screen. Irma stared with horror as the face moved around like a ball hanging from a string. When her song finally ended, the face zoomed out of focus and Irma screamed and threw her phone on her bed and ran from her room.

Irma and her mother knew then that they weren't alone in their house. They asked a psychic to check out if the house was indeed haunted and not long after the psychic arrived, she said that there was truly an evil spirit lurking inside the abode. When the psychic entered Irma's room, she fainted and started to convulse violently. After a few minutes, she regained consciousness and all she said was that the house needed to be blessed by a priest.

Irma and her mother didn't waste any time. They quickly called a priest to get rid of the evil being. The priest claimed that he felt really uncomfortable inside the house, as if an unknown force was draining all his powers. The priest wanted to leave saying that this was beyond his capability, that there was a "demon" lurking in the house. The priest and his assistant wanted to leave but Irma and her mother pleaded with him so he finally relented. He had his assistant light up incense but only a few, thin wisp of smoke came out of it. Every candle they lit would quickly be extinguished though there were no strong gust of wind. Finally, the sweat drenched priest finished blessing their house and took his leave right away as if pins were being stuck on his hide. Irma and her mother enjoyed a few days of peace.

The terror didn't end there, unfortunately. After that incident, Irma became afraid of staying alone in their house. So what she did was she would stay in school even after school ended for the day or she would go somewhere else until her mother goes home from work. Irma was very active in her school's cheering squad and because she was so absorbed in that particular day's practice, she didn't notice that it was already 8 in the evening when the practice finally finished.

Since it was quite late already, Irma thought that her mother was already home waiting for her. When she was just a few feet from her house, she heard people in the house laughing and talking, loud music was playing within. All the lights were lit inside. Irma was very surprised because she didn't know they were expecting company and her mother wasn't the type to just throw a party without her saying anything to her only daughter.

Then Irma got very scared when she grasped that though noise was coming from inside the house, she couldn't detect any movements from the window. Then her mobile phone made a sound, alerting her that there was an incoming message. It was from her mother, saying that she was at Irma's aunt house and she would just pick up Irma from school once she was ready to go home. Irma just stood there outside their house, not knowing what to do when one of their neighbors passed by and greeted Irma. She told Irma that it seems that they have company since the people who lived nearby could hear the noise coming from their house since 4pm that afternoon.

Irma broke down and said that her mother just texted her and that their house is supposed to be empty. So the neighbor helped Irma to go to her aunt's house where she and her mother stayed for the night. That night, they decided that they couldn't take it anymore and that they have to move somewhere else. They came to a decision to the house up for sale. When they returned to the house to pick up their belongings, they were horrified to see that all their furniture were strewn around the place, everything was in disarray. There was no sign of force entry so burglary was out of the question. Inside Irma's room, soil was scattered everywhere, especially on the bed.

The house was never sold. No one would buy it after every one know of the haunting. Finally, one of the neighbors spoke out that the previous owners of the house were MASSACRED during a house party. Apparently there was a drunken brawl and the man of the house was hacked to death by his friends. His children  were slaughtered and his wife was brutally raped and was BURIED ALIVE UNDER IRMA'S BED. The wife apparently was able to free herself from the ground and attempted to kill one of her rapists to get revenge. It was unfortunate that she was spotted by one of the killers and she was hacked to death like her husband.

Jesa said that Irma and her mom just had the house demolished and the vacant lot stands until today. Her friend got very thin because of the harrowing experience and wouldn't return to that place anymore.
